Yes, email marketing with no monthly fee is real, but it is not free. Self-hosted software like Sendy ($69 once), Acelle Mail ($74 once) or Mautic (free) removes the subscription. You still pay for a server, IPs, a domain and, if you use a relay, every email you send. On our Basic plan that running cost is about $11 a month, against roughly $310 a month for a per-contact platform at 25,000 contacts.
What "no monthly fee" actually removes
A normal email platform charges you every month for three things bundled together: the software, the sending infrastructure, and the team that runs both. Going subscription-free removes the first bill. The other two still exist. You either pay for them in small pieces or do the work yourself.
The subscription is the visible part. The running costs sit below it
The no-monthly-fee options compared
| Option | Upfront | Software monthly | You still pay for | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sendy | $69 one-time | none | hosting, Amazon SES per email | you |
| Acelle Mail | $74 one-time | none | hosting, a sending server | you |
| Mautic | free, open source | none | hosting, SMTP | you |
| Amazon SES alone | none | none, pay per use | $0.10 per 1,000 emails | you (API only, no campaign UI) |
| Lifetime-deal SaaS | one payment | none | usually capped sends | the vendor, while it lasts |
| Your own dedicated server (managed setup) | $549 to $2,997 once | none to us | hosting about $11 to $170 a month | built for you, owned by you |
Sendy's price is listed on sendy.co and Acelle's on its own site. Mautic is free to download. Each one handles lists, campaigns and stats, but none of them sends a single email by itself. They all need a sending server behind them, which is where most of the real cost and most of the deliverability risk sit.
What you still pay for
| Cost line | Typical price | Can you avoid it? |
|---|---|---|
| VPS or server | about $5 to $50 a month | no |
| Extra dedicated IPs | about $2 per IP a month | only by using a shared relay |
| Sending domain | about $10 a year | no |
| Relay fees (if using SES) | $0.10 per 1,000 emails | yes, with your own SMTP server |
| Software updates | free, or a small fee for major versions | sometimes |
| Your time | 1 to 3 hours a month once stable | only with a managed setup |
The relay line is the one to watch. At 100,000 emails a month, Amazon SES costs about $10, which is cheap. At 3 million a month it is about $300, and SES reviews accounts with high bounce or complaint rates. A dedicated SMTP server replaces that per-email fee with a flat hosting bill.
What it costs over three years at 25,000 contacts
Here is a realistic case: 25,000 contacts, four campaigns a month, so about 100,000 emails a month.
| Setup | Year 1 | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Per-contact platform (about $310 a month) | $3,720 | $11,160 |
| Sendy + Amazon SES + small VPS | about $249 | about $609 |
| BulkEmailSetup Basic (own server, 3 IPs) | about $691 | about $975 |
The Sendy row is $69 once plus about $10 a month for SES and $5 for a VPS. The Basic row is $549 once, about $11 a month for the VPS and 3 IPs, and $10 a year for the domain. Both beat the subscription by thousands. The difference between the two is who owns the sending side: with Sendy and SES you rent Amazon's IPs and live by their review rules, with your own server the IPs are yours.

The catch: you become the operator
No subscription means no vendor team doing the jobs you never see. Someone still has to do them.
- Bounce handling. Hard bounces must be suppressed automatically, or your bounce rate climbs past 5% and inbox providers start deferring.
- Warm-up. New IPs need 4 to 8 weeks of gradual volume before they can carry a full campaign. See our IP warm-up schedule.
- Authentication. SPF, DKIM and DMARC have to be right on every sending domain.
- Blocklist checks. If an IP lands on a list, you find out and fix it.
- Updates and backups. The software, the server and the database are yours to keep current.
Every no-fee setup trades some money for some of your time
This is the honest trade. Below a few thousand contacts, a free or cheap SaaS plan usually wins, because the time costs more than the subscription. Above roughly 25,000 contacts the maths flips hard, and a setup service removes most of the work in the first month. Our breakdown of what a setup service should cost covers what a fair quote includes.
Is a lifetime deal the same thing?
Not quite. A lifetime deal on a SaaS tool removes the monthly bill, but you still use the vendor's servers on the vendor's terms. Most deals cap sends or contacts, and if the company is sold or shuts down, the deal can end. Self-hosted software keeps running on your server whatever happens to its author.
| Question | Lifetime-deal SaaS | Self-hosted software |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | none | none |
| Sending caps | usually | only your server's capacity |
| Who owns the IPs | the vendor | you |
| If the vendor shuts down | access can end | keeps working |
Who should go subscription-free
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Under 2,000 contacts, rare sends | a free SaaS plan |
| 5,000 to 25,000 contacts, technical | Sendy or Acelle + Amazon SES |
| 25,000+ contacts, regular campaigns | your own server with dedicated IPs |
| Agency or reseller | own server with white label |

How BulkEmailSetup helps
We set up a dedicated SMTP server with a campaign platform on hosting you own, so there is no monthly fee to us and no contact limit. You pay once for the setup and pay your host directly for the server.
| Plan | One-time fee | Emails per day | Dedicated IPs | Hosting you pay your host |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $549 | 25,000 | 3 | about $11 a month |
| Advance | $1,199 | 200,000 | 15 | about $49 a month |
| Custom | $2,997 | 1,000,000 | 60 | about $170 a month |
SPF, DKIM, DMARC, bounce handling and a warm-up plan are part of the build, which removes most of the operator work described above. Every plan has a 15-day money-back guarantee. See the Basic plan or compare all pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do email marketing without a monthly fee?
Yes. Self-hosted software such as Sendy ($69 one-time), Acelle Mail ($74 one-time) or Mautic (free, open source) has no subscription. You run it on your own server and send through Amazon SES or your own SMTP. There is no platform fee each month, but there are small running costs for hosting and sending that never fully go away.
What do you still pay for without a subscription?
Hosting, IPs, domains and sending. A small VPS costs about $5 a month, extra dedicated IPs about $2 each a month, a sending domain about $10 a year, and a relay like Amazon SES $0.10 per 1,000 emails. On BulkEmailSetup's Basic plan the running cost is about $11 a month for the VPS and 3 IPs.
Is self-hosted email marketing free?
The software can be free, the sending cannot. Mautic and Listmonk cost nothing to download, but every email still needs a server and an IP to leave from, and inbox providers judge that IP. The real cost is hosting plus either per-email relay fees or a dedicated server, plus the hours you spend keeping it healthy.
What is the catch with no-monthly-fee tools?
You become the operator. Updates, bounce handling, warm-up, blocklist checks and support all move from the vendor to you. Deliverability is your job: a bad list burns your own IPs, with no platform team to call. For senders above about 25,000 contacts the savings usually outweigh this, and a managed setup covers most of the hard part.
How much does no-monthly-fee email marketing cost over 3 years?
On BulkEmailSetup's Basic plan, about $975 at 25,000 contacts: $549 once, about $396 of hosting over 36 months, and about $30 for a domain. A per-contact platform at the same list size often costs around $310 a month, which is over $11,000 in three years. The gap grows with the list, because the self-hosted cost does not.
Do lifetime deals count as no monthly fee?
Sort of. A lifetime deal removes the subscription, but most cap monthly sends or contacts, and the vendor can change or end the product. If the company shuts down, the deal ends with it. Software you install yourself, on a server you control, keeps working whatever happens to the company that wrote it.
